Geoinformation Systems combine a variety of methods such as data management, spatial analysis, modelling, and visualization. Hence a GIS will build the backbone of a common Earth system modelling platform for a better understanding of processes. Since GIS can integrate and manage huge amounts of heterogeneous data (raster/vector/metadata), a unified geodata base model will be developed to allow time-dependent parameterisation and evaluation of model results with existing observational data sets from proxy and biomarker archives and furthermore allows to run these models on different reconstructed palaeo-scenarios (in close cooperation with P21, K. Gohl). Hence up- and downscaling of these models and coupling of local models and regional scales can be evaluated within such a geo-data base model.

Multiple geostatistical methods will be adopted to regionalize and refine palaeoceanographic provinces with a combination of spatially and temporally highly resolved topological grids and spatially coupled proxy archives refined into appropriate time slots and representative palaeo-provinces. Hence a concept of regionalisation needs to be developed for crucial palaeo-scenarios, especially in terms of parameter homogenisation and a representative evaluation of palaeoclimate and palaeoproductivity models.

Working on this topic demands a strong geostatistical, geophysical and geological background with an interest in geodynamics as well as proxy and biomarker archives. Experience in GIS modelling, data base management, computer programming and grid processing is necessary.
