Tuition and Fees

ESSReS offers the programme without tuiton fees. However, PhD students have to be enrolled at University of Bremen or Jacobs University. Here, each semester you will have to pay the enrollment fee  ("Rückmeldegebühr") of approx. € 214,50. It includes free public transport within Bremen and Bremerhaven and surroundings ("Semesterticket") and warrants the student status that allows for benefits like reduced insurence fees or entrance costs at cinema or museum etc.

Please be aware that living expenses in Germany might be higher than in other countries. It has been estimated that students in the land Bremen will require approx. € 800,- per month to cover the costs of living and study.


Estimated costs include:

Accomodation: € 250,- per month on average (deposit: one to two month rent, returned on expiry of the duration of rent if there is no cause for complain)

Medical insurance: mandatory, but on your own responsibility

Third party liability insurance: € 25,- per year

Lunch in the refectory: € 3,- per day on average

other costs: varies from person to person but is unlikely to be less than € 250,- per month (food, books, stationery, travel, clothes, sport/leisure, etc).

 

Stipends:

Internal PhD positions at ESSReS are financed by stipends, enabling the students to exclusively work on their research project. The stipends range around 1357,- EUR plus 103,- EUR book allowance, thus in total 1460,- EUR, but depend on the quality of the application and the maritial status etc. This includes all taxes and social charges with exception of the health insurance. The health insurance will be covered by an amount which covers the cost totally in most cases, depending on the health status. You have to care for the insurance on your own, but of course will get support for the forms etc. Additional funding for children can also be granted.

Prerequisite:  At the beginning of the PhD thesis the graduation must not date back longer than 3 years. Servitors must not have completed their 30th year of age. Please note that this is a binding period. Thus, you have to ensure that the envisaged project can be finished within this time.
