Information for PhD Students

Students from abroad are strongly asked to clarify certain formal aspects, when applying at ESSReS. Principles apply conditional for foreign (EU or non-EU members) and German PhD's:

VISA: Your entry permit to Germany depends on the country of origin (need of visa, need of letter of invitation, confirmation of financial support, working contract, etc.). If accepted as PhD student at ESSReS, you will get financial support in form of a stipend. With this you can apply for a permission to live ("Aufenthaltsgenehmigung") in German that you obtain from the German Embassy in your home country. You also may need a permission to work ("Arbeitserlaubnis") for which you can apply for, here. You need 2 passport photos, your passport, and (if applying) a proof of marriage. A visitor visa does not work, you need a visa which allows to work in the field of science.

Health Insurance: With a stipend one is liable to health insurance deductions. Even if one is registered at the university one must join a health fund. You can choose a private insurance on your own. Some health insurances accept you as a student when enrolled at the University. The employer is obligated to be informed of the health fund of your choice. If you are already registered in a substitute fund you need to present a coverage confirmation to the personnel department.

Income tax: The stipend is not charged with income taxes.

Social insurance: With your stipend you are not included in the social insurance system in Germany ("Sozialversicherungspflicht").
