PhD-project title: Investigating the impact of extraterrestrial energetic particles on NOx and ozone in the middle and upper atmosphere on the basis of three dimensional model studies

The main topic of this PhD project is to investigate the impact of extraterrestrial energetic particles e.g. from solar or geomagnetic storms on NOx and ozone in the stratosphere and mesopsphere on the basis of three-dimensional model studies.

During particle events the upper and middle atmosphere will be ionized. This ionization will start fast ion chemistry reactions which lead to an increase of odd hydrogen and nitrogen constituents and therefore to a decrease of ozone concentration.

To simulate these particle events, a three-dimensional stratospheric model of photochemistry and transport will be extended up to the mesopause. Parameterized ionization rates and a parameterization of the ion chemistry derived from the off-line ion chemistry modulel UBIC will be implemented, and model runs for different particle events will be carried out. The results from these model studies will then be compared to satellite and ground-based measurements, and the long-term impact of these events studied using three-dimensional model runs extending weeks or months after the particle events.
