PhD-project title: Modeling isotope distributions in Greenland and Antarctica.

Investigating the past climate of the earth is crucial for the understanding and prediction of future climate change. My PhD topic is centered in palaeo-climate science and tackles the climate dynamics of the polar ice sheets on centennial to millennial timescales. Investigating these glacial/interglacial dynamics, I will utilize a higher order ice sheet model and palaeo-proxy datasets from Greenland and Antarctic ice cores.

Isotopes play an important role as so called climate-proxies. During my PhD I will investigate the isotopic distribution and stratigraphy of the polar ice sheets from paleoclimate timescales to present day.

For this purpose I will develop two advective transport models which will be applied to a higher order ice sheet model simulating both isotopic distribution and stratigraphy in Greenland and Antarctica.
By comparison of ice core data to simulated stratigraphies one can both evaluate the fitness of the applied model, and support the interpretation of ice cores.

Another scope of this PhD work is to close the isotope circulation in a coupled model including atmosphere, ocean and cryosphere components. Additionally potential future ice core drilling sites can be suggested by modeled stratigraphies.
The interdisciplinary approach pursued in my PhD work will hopefully gain from as well as contribute to the vivid environment of the ESSReS graduate school.
