PhD project title: The influence of western Weddell Sea shelf on the fringing basins

Short Abstract:

The Earth climate is changing and the poles are the regions where it is most evident. The consequences of this change in Antarctica are very relevant because the Antarctic continental shelf is the source region for deep and bottom water, which fills the abyss in most parts of the global ocean. The Weddell Sea is considered to be one of the most important sources for those waters. Two areas of the Weddell Sea raise the researchers' attention: the southwestern continental shelf in front of Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf (FRIS) and the western continental shelf off Larsen Ice Shelf (LIS). The first one was the focus of several studies in the past, but the importance of the last needs to be further investigated. The main goal of the work proposed here is to clarify the role of western Weddell Sea continental shelf, including Larsen Ice Shelf, for deep and bottom water formation and, thus, for the ventilation of the fringing basins. To perform this study, historic and recent hydrographic observations will be used in combination with numerical work utilizing the recently developed Finite Element Sea-Ice Ocean Model (FESOM).
