PhD project title: Analysis of Arctic multiyear sea ice cover

Global warming is most pronounced in the Arctic, and the Arctic sea ice cover is a sensitive climate indicator. Multiyear ice is important because it differs from first-year in physical and biological respects. The total sea ice extent and area can be determined quite reliably from space, however until now observation of the area covered with multiyear ice poses much more difficulties. Especially the intra-annual development cannot be determined unambiguously: while according to scatterometer observations, the multiyear sea ice area decreases during the freezing season (from October to March), it increases if detected with passive microwave sensors which is physically not possible. The goal of this work is to establish a consistent and reliable time series of the Arctic multiyear sea ice with radiometers and scatterometers observatios, best from 1978 onwards.
