ESSReS started its work!
On June 1, 2008 the first PhD students of the Helmholtz Research School on Earth System Science started their work. After a thorough application and evaluation period, where 112 candidates from 34 countries applied for 12 projects, the internal PhD positions within ESSReS have been filled. More the 6570 web-calls of our ESSReS webpage from throughout the world were registered during the application phase, demonstration a broad visability of ESSReS. Thanks to all who have been interested in our research and educational program.

Between June 1 and October 1, 2008, all 12 internal PhD students will start their project within ESSReS. The application period for additional 12 external PhD students, aiming to participate in the ESSReS educational program is currently open. They also will be selected until October 2008.
In an inauguration ceremony on October 1, the research school will be officially opened in attendence of the three presidents and directors of the collaborating research institutions. In the following week, the first introductory course on Earth System Science will establish the educational curriculum.
