The soft skill programme will be organized by the Helmholtz Association as a 3-day joint seminar of different Helmholtz research schools in Germany. To meet the high quality approach of the Helmholtz Association for this programme the soft skill programme will be organized in cooperation with the Imperial College in London. The course is designed to address a number of development areas, such as personal effectiveness, team working, networking and communication skills.
The second course "Communication and Presentation Skills" is organized in two groups (I: 26-28 June 2009; II: 28-30 June 2009). It will take place at NH Hotel Berlin Potsdam in Kleinmachnow between Potsdam and Berlin.
This course is designed to provide postgraduate research students with an opportunity to develop their skills in communication and presentation, which is a central task in research. In order to prepare some material for the course the students are asked to bring:
- Four (4) students to bring with them a PowerPoint presentation on the their research topic / area. Each presentation should be 10 minutes in duration and designed for an academic but non-expert audience. The students will be required to present these to the whole group on the afternoon of Day 1.
- Sixteen (16) students (not including the 4 above), are to bring with them an abstract on their work appropriate for submission to a conference for a paper presentation. These are not to exceed 250 words in length, and should also include an appropriate title.
- At least twelve (12) students (different to above) to bring a poster of their research (this could be one that they have previously developed); if more students choose to bring a poster then that’s fine.
