SUMMER SCHOOL ON "CLIMATE VARIABILITY & CLIMATE CHANGE: ESTIMATING AND REDUCING UNCERTAINTIES"

8-17 June 2009, Hungarian Meteorological Service, The summer school is planned to be held in a picturesque part of Hungary, the Danube Bend.

The main objective of the summer school is to bring together the users ofIPCC-class climate models, the researchers from the theoretical climate dynamics, and dynamical- and complex-system experts in order to chart a path towards better understanding the sources of uncertainties in climate models, as well as estimating and reducing these uncertainties.

The deadline for application to participate in the event and for the financial support is 31 December 2008, documents required: Curriculum Vitae; List of publications; Motivation Letter; Letter of recommendation.

 

 

8th International NCCR Climate Summer School with participation of IGBP-PAGES

"Climate variability, forcings, feedbacks and responses: the long-term perspective"

30 August - 4 September 2009, Grindelwald, Switzerland

The NCCR Climate, Switzerland's Centre of Excellence in Climate and Climate Impact Research, invites young scientists to join leading climate researchers in a scenic Swiss Alpine setting for keynote lectures, workshops and poster sessions.

The topics covered at the NCCR Climate Summer School 2009 will include:
* climate variability: the long-term perspective
* reconstruction techniques, past climate modelling and data assimilation
* forcings, feedbacks and responses of the climate system
* impacts of climate change: the hydrological cycle

The Summer School invites young researchers from all fields of climate research. The courses cover a broad spectrum of climate and climate impact research issues and foster cross-disciplinary links. Each topic includes keynote plenary lectures and workshops with in-depth discussion in smaller groups. All Summer School participants present a poster of their research and there will be ample opportunity for discussion.

The Urbino Summer School in Paleoclimatology:

Magellan Introductory Course in Ocean Drilling Sciences (MICOD)

University of Urbino, Italy; July 15-21, 2009

A short course on the stratigraphy and sedimentology of deep-sea sediments organized with the financial support of the European Science Foundation (ESF)

MICOD aims at providing participants with a multidisciplinary learning experience within the field of Ocean Drilling Sciences and Stratigraphy of marine sediments. A general introduction to the oceanographic and climate system and dynamics will complement a series of lectures and exercises on the stratigraphy of marine sediments. Field sampling will allow students to produce original data across intervals marking the evolution of Cretaceous and Cenozoic climates. Produced data will be compared with the deep-sea records to evaluate them in a global context.

The collaboration with the Consortium for Ocean Leadership “School of Rock” (http://oceanleadership.org/learning/teachers/school_of_rock) will allow implementing modules mimicking the typical situation of incoming cores onboard the JOIDES Resolution.

 

Past Global Change Reconstruction & Modelling Techniques

Organized in collaboration with the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD)

The second course of the USSP summerschool discusses past climates variability and dynamics of Cretaceous and Cenozoic climates at different time scales and seeks to integrate lectures on the many different areas of paleoclimatology including biogeochemical cycling, paleoceanography and climate models.

Interactive discussions of case-studies (e.g. black shale deposition and carbon cycling including Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events, Paleocene-Eocene hyperthermals,the Eocene-Oligocene transition, glacial cycles and millenian-scale variability) in classes, practicals and in the field will provide participants with an advanced working knowledge on the paleobiological and geochemical proxy data and their use in the reconstruction and modelling of past climates.
