Instructions for application at ESSRES
The Earth Sytem Science Research School (ESSRES) is a joint initiative between the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Bremerhaven, the Institute for Environmental Physics at the University of Bremen, and the Jacobs University, Bremen.
Admission to ESSRES is coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute.
The official start of the Research School is 01 June, 2008.
What We Are Looking For:
ESSRES seeks PhD students who have strong records of academic performance as graduate students in one of the fields related to Earth System Science and Biology. An important aspect of ESSRES is to couple observations with numerical models and simulations to better understand past and present environments.
Besides your completion of your disciplinary graduate degree we especially seek for students, who are keen to work at the border between disciplines and face the challenge of a highly interdisciplinary education and scientific career.

What To Do:
There are two ways of becoming a member of ESSRES:
a) as an Internal PhD student:
To become an internal PhD student you are applying for a PhD position in one of the outlined projects of the ESSRES programme. Successful applicants will be accepted as PhD students at ESSRES and will benefit from the coordinated PhD programme.
If you intend to apply as internal PhD student, follow the instructions, complete the application form and submit it, with all required supporting material, before the deadline on 22 May, 2008 to admission@earth-system-science.org.
b) as an External PhD student:
To become an external PhD student, you need to be employed in an external PhD project that is closely related to the research school scientific programme. Your PhD project must be registered at one of the partner Institutes AWI, University of Bremen, or Jacobs University. You can apply for participating in the educational course programme and to benefit from additional research funding options. As an external PhD student you are an equal full member of ESSRES.
If you intend to apply as an external PhD student, follow the instructions, complete the application form and submit it, with all required supporting material, before the deadline on 31 July, 2008 to admission@earth-system-science.org.
For both application methods is imperative:
- We do not accept any hardcopies/paper copies sent by ordinary post or fax (excluding the copy of the signed main application form).
- You may obtain your application form by going to the respective admission page on the ESSRES website.
- Regardless of the outcome of your application we are unable to return any documents you send to us.
When You Will Be Hearing From Us:
A decision on your application will be made within eight weeks after the deadline by which you have to submit your completed application.
Admission Interview:
During the admission process the key faculty members in the academic field for which you are applying may contact you for a telephone interview.
Financial Assistance (only for internal PhD's):
During the PhD studies, ESSRES will provide candidates with a stipend that is limited to maximum 3 years. A stipend requires at the beginning of the PhD thesis that the graduation must not date back longer than 3 years. Servitors must not have completed their 30th year of age.
